Good luck with the change of lifestyle, Ian. It's hard as hell, but once you get past the first couple of weeks, it starts to become routine. Just prep your meals the night before so you don't have to think 'bout what to eat the next day. An' step up on a piece of cardio equipment, ease yourself into it an' gradually increase the intensity. You don't have to kill yourself, just get the heart rate up a bit. Good luck an' WHASSUP!

Hey Ian,
Been there...I once weighed in at 270lbs. That was over 12 years ago. I stared out with the "Body for Life" program.

Its really simple & highly recommend it! Check out bodyforlife.com.
Blend in the concepts along with this awesome challenge presented to us by Mountain Man & a bit of hard work...you'll get to your goals.

The awesome thing about this challenge...is you have a network that will help you along. I would highly suggest you keep a food journal & log your workouts. You will find templates at bodyforlife.com.

It worked for me...I am sure it will work for you!

Stay on it & stay focused!

I'm about to start reading the body for life book. My wife did it and it really worked for her. I'll check it out myself!

WWWHHHAAASSSUUUUUUPPPPPPP, IAN!!!!!!!!!!
Hey Bro, IT IS HARD. When you start droppin the weight though, you'll have somethin over them "I'VE BEEN SKINNY MY WHOLE LIFE, WHAT 'BOUT YOU???" Hey Bro, FUCK THEM!!!! Just go to the gym do your thing and get out. That's it. When your there, disappear. Focus so intently on what your doing, that you can't see or hear NO ONE, except the MOTHERFUCKER in the mirror. He's the one you gotta beat. No one else.
Use an MP3 player to get your own music in your head, so you don't have to hear the gym's crappy music. Hey, if someone decides to talk to you, entertain the conversation, if they're cool, cool. If not, FUCK'EM. And hit the cardio, you, like me, need it. Hit it hard, drive it 'til it gets in your blood. That's the way it's gotta be.
AS I DESTROY, SO I CREATE.

Yo bro, i know it's not easy to get started were all here to help you out as much as we can.

I'll start out with your diet, you said you have trouble sticking to one. Well the main thing to keep somebody on a diet is to provide good healthy foods you enjoy eating in the first place. Good foods such as eggs, chicken, lean beef, steak, oats, vegetables, fruits, protein bars, cause lets face it if the food tastes horrible it's going to be that much harder to eat it. So first things first is find out what healthy foods you actually enjoy. Another thing is you have to ease yourself into the process with any other thing quitting is a process. Quitting junk food works the same way as say quitting a pack of cigarettes, you slowly lower the amount you eat until it's gone. Say tomorrow you start out eating one "junk" meal a day, it'll be an improvement over your current diet and you keep going from there, to one junk snack a day, to one junk meal every other day, to once a week, to not at all. Remember not to eat to the point where your past being "full", keep everything portioned eat as much as you need and no more.

Now for weight lifting, your just starting out so the most intense workouts out there just wont work, you have to learn to swim before you can jump into the deep end. I would recommend a 3 day a week full body lifting program. Programs like these will help you get your body healthier and more complete. It's not a lot to ask out of any beginner and it's something you yourself can accomplish. Spread out the days something like Monday, Wednesday, Friday.

For Cardio hell you have to start the same way as with the lifting. You can't start out by running a marathon. The way i started many some years ago was i would walk around my neighborhood. I would walk to start for maybe 15 minutes 4-5 days a week and i would increase it by 5 minutes every week. When i got to walking for about an hour i moved to jogging for 15 minutes 4-5 a days a week. Increased that by 5 minutes every week and slowly but surely i got to the body i desired and i got healthy enough to be both a cross country and track runner.

Motivation wise you have all of us here on the forum but when that's not enough i have two techniques that always worked for me. One was there was a lot said about me from people when i was a heavier kid. I wrote down everything i was called it was a lot, and i had a big poster on the door of my room with all of them listed. Every morning i would wake up to that poster and trust me if that wasn't motivation enough my second technique was posting a picture of me with my shirt off right next to it. I wanted to be healthy and that constant reminder first thing waking up made me determined for the rest of the day to get that way.

I hope some of this helped, good luck bro

...a big killer of my ambition is going to the gym where i work out and seeing all the fit men and women it makes me down i feel ill never reach where they are now...

There's good information in this thread so far, Ian. Ultimately, though, it's going to be up to you.

Being positive is a must. Two people can be in the same place and have completely opposite perspectives. One person can look at the fit men and women around them and draw inspiration from it. Another person can look at the fit people around and get down on themselves for not being more like them.

The person that reacts positively gives themselves the better opportunity to succeed.

It's possible that you may someday realize that the changes you see on the outside are just the side-effects of the changes that were first made on the inside.

I hope you find this site, and the people you meet here, helpful in making your changes.

All the best to you.

I want to start out by saying there is nothing wrong with you bro, your the same just like any of us. Second i would like to say don't let the scale dictate how you feel about yourself. Trust me if i let the scale get to me i'd have never got as far as i have. It's all about how you feel, if your working hard and you feel healthier and better each week than that's what matters not what the scale says. As a recommendation for getting past that 10 lb plateau is to clean up your diet as much as you can, make your meals smaller and more frequent, hit the weights hard, and last but not least get out there and be active. If you have any questions don't be afraid to ask, best of luck.

Ian, don't forget, you need to chill on the partying, too. Late nights and binge drinking KILLS PROGRESS. I had a friend who used to tell me that i needed to get out more. I asked why? He said, "You don't want to be like those Bodybuilders who take it seriously, "They" have no life." I told him, "I want to be like "those Bodybuilders" because, I do take it seriously. They have what I want." He couldn't believe it. I don't expect him to. He chooses to live his life his own way. This is a way of life that i have driven into my life, my blood. My wife tells me, when I get irritated at something, "You need to go to the gym..." Especially if i haven't been able to go for more than a couple of days, because of work or something. Anyway...
Also, what your friend does might not necessarily be what you need. Try some different exercises, different rep schemes, number of sets, different everything... just tweaking something so small can have a big impact. Experiment. No one reacts the same to the same stimulus. Don't be afraid to experiment. Instead of regular pasta, try wheat pasta. You should just about be eating everything wheat when it comes to type of flour (bread, pasta) or taking in MINIMAL amouts of enriched flour (white). That one guy might be right, you might need to calculate your nutrient intake for your meals or have someone help you with that process.
Hey, I'm here too, if you need any advice. If i can help, i'll do my best.

thank you to the both of you...first let me say sorry to clenceo i missed you in my thanks and it was nice to see than all of you were there you were at the weight im usally stuck around and it helped to know you got through it...and second im going to i think instead of running 30 mins im going to run 40 now and see if that helps and another thi9ng that worries me is lifting i dont have someone to stop me each time i go for chest and all the others i dont know what to do i know fear is a killer but im just nervous when i used to go with my friends they would help me through it and they would get me to lift that higher weight but now that im at a scheduling conflict i cant go much with them any more...its alittle unnerving to try to lift heavier but as i see in all of you i cant let my frae ruin my progress i think instead of doing all the free lifting for chest ill try to use the machines alittle more till i feel stronger and for the rest well if i cant get it up i cant beafraid and feel nervous for looking liek a whimp like you all told me everyon around me was there once and if i cant do it then i cant do it who cares ill work harder till i try again and can do it...this has helped me so much and its been a real blessing....now i have a question that mostlikely belongs in the suplments fourm but i felt maybe a more personal talk first would help with the mixed feelings i would get in there...but is there a suplm, ent that would help me to loose the weight faster or is it better to go all natrual....:):D

You can buy a fat burner, but it's not gonna do the work for you. If you diet is not in check and you don't do your required cardio, you gonna be amped up and going nowhere.

No offense friend but you need to stay focused. Not having friends there with you is only an excuse and your done with those it's time for results. Personally if i go on my own i'll ask someone at the gym politely for a spot no one will look down on you for it, they'll respect you for trying to go for heavy weights and being safe about it.

In regards to supplements until you have a solid lifting regiment and are regulating your nutrition supplements shouldn't even cross your mind. First you have to get your lifting straightened out and keep working hard, next clean up your diet, but i want to stress in this post that we have been talking bout cleaning up diets what to eat but i want to point out how much to eat. You are trying to lose weight so your not going to be eating 5,000 Calories a day. I try to eat around 12 calories per lb of body weight a day. Which is giving me enough energy to work out at a high intensity.

Overall, clean up your diet, train hard, and down the road you can begin to talk about supplements but not until your well into your routine.
